Tracking H1N1
Managing News helps a team within the federal government monitor media mentions of swine flu and visualize private internal data sets.
Fairly light customization was needed to make this work, including adding a custom parser to manage private data that had a unique XML schema and adding additional custom map tiles, in this case tiles made from ESRI's data on hospital and school coverage. These screenshots show the custom map tiles and a few public media feeds from a development site.
We have swapped out the main map for hillshade tiles.

Afghanistan/Pakistan News
Managing News allows NGOs to monitor on the ground security situations around the world. Here are screenshots from our internal site monitoring news on Afghanistan and Pakistan, which we used last month when we were in Islamabad and Kabul.
As you can see, we have swapped out the main map for hillshade tiles, since the region's geography and isolation have a large influence on the news. In this example, base layer maps really matter.
We also uploaded a custom geo taxonomy so we can tag key places like Peshawar, Swat, and Waziristan that don't normally make it onto geo tagging lists.

Drupal Planet
Our team is of course using Managing News to track our favorite open source project - Drupal. This site has more than 300 feeds of key developers and organizations working with Drupal, and it's just out of the box ManagingNews.
We use this site to see what's happening with Drupal around the world, which is particularly useful since we are involved with local Drupal developer communities outside the United States. Bonnie uses the share feature to post links to Twitter and flags posts to team members by sending them over in an email. Jeff has a basket where he collects all of his favorite articles on smallcore.
